Introduction

The Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center (ASL), which includes the NSU Oceanographic Campus Library, welcomes cash and in-kind donations, such as book and other collections. Monetary gifts are welcome for the purchase of specific items consistent with the Library’s Collection Development Policy. The ASL adheres to the NSU Gift Acceptance and Scholarship Policies and Procedures.

Any materials given to the library are evaluated by the same standards as purchased materials as described in the Collection Development Policy. The library reserves the right to dispose of any portion of a gift that does not meet collection development criteria. Gifts or portions of gifts will not be returned, even if they are not selected for addition to the collection. Gifts offered with restricting conditions may require a gift agreement, as determined by the Vice President for Information Services/University Librarian or his/her designee(s). The library determines final disposition of gifts or donations.

We reserve the right to determine retention, location, cataloging treatment and disposal of the material. Material we don’t add to the ASL collections may be used for exchange, sold to raise money, donated to other institutions, or otherwise discarded.

The library reserves the right to decline a donation based on the criteria outlined below. If accepted, upon receipt the donations become the property of the library. Donors are not allowed to place certain special restrictions, such as the use or disposal of the gifted material.

Monetary Donations

Monetary contributions to the Library support the purchase of books and materials necessary to maintain the Library’s status as a premier facility. All contributions to Nova Southeastern University (NSU) are tax deductible. NSU and the ASL accept contributions of cash, stocks, or other appreciable assets, as stated in the NSU Gift Acceptance and Scholarship Policies and Procedures.

Book Collections or In-Kind

The ASL accepts donations of books, DVDs, Blu-Rays, CDs, video games, audio books, manuscripts, photographs, slides, equipment, realia, artifacts, art, or other documents/items from collections. Rare books, manuscripts or special collections will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the appropriate staff members, in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Collection Development.

Memorial/Tribute Book Donations

A donation to ASL may be in the form of a memorial or tribute to an individual, or a commemoration of a special occasion, such as a birthday, anniversary, graduation or other special occasion. The library respectfully requests a minimum contribution of $100 per book.

Once a donation is received, the library will send an acknowledgement to the family/friend of the honored person(s), notifying them of the gift. Each book purchased through a memorial/tribute donation will bear a personalized bookplate commemorating the person or event.

How to Donate

The Library receives all approved in-kind donations. Anyone wishing to make a cash or in-kind contribution may contact either the Assistant Director of Collection Development or NSU’s Director of Major Gifts. To donate materials to NSU’s ASL, please call Collection Development at (954) 262-4633. The appropriate staff and the Assistant Director of Collection Development will review all donated materials.

The Library’s Development Department administers monetary donations. All cash and in-kind donations are forwarded to the NSU’s Office of Advancement and Community Relations for University processing.

Acknowledgements

The NSU Office of Advancement and Community Relations officially acknowledges all donations to NSU. All cash gifts of $1,000 or more will be personally acknowledged by the University President.

Appraisals

The ASL will not appraise gift materials. The Library is prohibited by conflict-of-interest concerns from providing estimates of monetary value for any donation. If desired, appraisals should be sought from qualified third parties. The ASL adheres to all federal and state regulations governing donations, including rulings on appraisals for tax deduction. Donors must comply with all IRS regulations in force before delivery of gifts or donations to NSU. The acceptance of a gift that has been appraised by the donor or a third party in no way implies the library’s endorsement of the appraisal.

If you believe your gift is worth $5,000.00 or more, you must provide a formal appraisal to ASL and file the appropriate IRS form(s). Donors are encouraged to consult with a tax advisor on what can be claimed legally.

By posting this information, all donors agree to the above policy when they gift their donation to the NSU ASL.
